There are two types of fears that we experience in this world. One type of fear is healthy and the other is not. The most common type of fear is phobos which is the Greek word for phobias.
Unhealthy Fear- Phobia
This is an unhealthy fear. It is when I casually overestimating the danger and underestimating my ability to cope. What a lie! Common phobias that we typically see are fears in relation to finances, health, failure, death, loneliness, rejection, flying, heights, public speaking, snakes, and spiders. You get the idea.
In my life, I’ve experienced many fears- from fear of iguanas to anxiety attacks and a whole lot of other irrational fears such as preaching falsely or failing so badly that I dishonor Jesus.
Healthy Fear- God Fearing
The second type of fear is godly fear. A god-given survival mechanism. A fear that helps us keep ‘us’ alive and protect us from danger. This fear is tied with our god-given conscience that testifies of God’s righteousness. This implements a fear of God in us even if we don’t believe in him, our souls still feel condemned. The Spirit of God does not produce negative fear. Therefore, condemnation does not exist for those that are in Christ, Jesus.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” I’m sure you’ve heard that by now. The fear God and no, I am not talking about being frightened by God and though this is the first step of conversion is fearing the one who can cast both your soul and body in hell (Luke 12:5). That fear is a good fear that draws you near to God. But after you have come in communion with Christ we experience other types of fear.
Fear of God after your conversion is also portrayed in,
Respect
Reverence
Awe
Honor
Adoration
Worship
LOVE FOR GOD.
Repentance
Soak yourself in fear of God. Honor him, adore him. Repent from your sins and seek God’s words for your life. In Proverbs 1-2 Solomon talks about God’s wisdom starts with fear. One thing that struck me as I was studying these passages is God’s grace of giving us his knowledge. In Proverbs 2:3-5, Solomon says that if we call out for insight and seek it like silver search for it as for hidden treasures then we will understand the fear of God and find his knowledge. Today, choose healthy fear. Fear God and you need not fear anything or anyone else.
