God’s work is glorified in the redemption of this, that there exists an absolute and universal dependence of the redeemed on Him. The nature and ruse of redemption are such, that the redeemed are in everything directly, immediately, and entirely depended on God: they are dependent on him for all and are dependent on him in every way.
The redeemed have all their good of God.
God is the creator of all good. All good things are a gift from God (James 1:17). It’s because of God we have our Redeemer: it is God that has provided a Savior for us. It is God that provided and gave the Redeemer to buy salvation for us. It is through God that salvation is brought: he gives the purchaser because only he can afford the purchased. And because of God, we receive all the benefits that Christ has purchased.
It’s through God that Jesus Christ becomes ours. We are brought to him and united to him. Through God, we receive faith to draw close to him, that we may find interest in him. With our faith in Christ God can pardon, justify, and deliver us from the gates of hell. It is favor that the redeemed are received into and are made objects of when they are justified. So that God can deliver from the dominion of sin and cleanse us from our filthiness, and changes us from our deformity.
The redeemed receive their true excellency.
It is of God that the redeemed receive true excellence. Wisdom and holiness. The Holy Spirit, sent by God; as is God, by whose operation and indwelling the knowledge of divine things. The Holy Spirit gives holy disposition and all grace which are conferred and upheld.
The grace of God that lavishes so freely is most indefinite free. He had no obligation to bestow such a gift. He could’ve easily rejected fallen man as he did the fallen angels. We did nothing to merit this grace. While we were enemies and before we had the power of repentance, God’s love saw no excellency in us to attract.
Yet, he made a way. The grace in bestowing this gift is great in proportion to our unworthiness. It was pure grace that God gave us his only begotten Son. This grace is great in proportion to the dignity and excellence of what is given: the gift is infinitely precious because it was a person infinitely worthy, a person of an infinite glory. The benefit is infinitely doubled, that in him we have deliverance from an infinite eternal misery. Instead, we receive eternal joy and glory.
The redeemed have it all.
