Did you know that memorization increases your brain activity? This new year, 2020, I’ve committed to a Spirit-filled resolution to memorizing one Bible verse every week. Like in college, I spent hours memorizing business terms and symbols and It trained my mind to focus on the things that are most important for the tests. So, if we memorize terms for school how much more would our life benefit if we commit to memorizing God’s spoken Word? How much more would that help us during our tests? In this post, I’m sharing 5 ways Bible memorization can benefit your life.

1) Memorizing Bible Verses Increases Faith
Scripture mentions in Romans 10:17, “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” Memorizing Bible verses helps increase your faith. The more you recite and repeat those precious words the more you are being filled with faith. The world, in fact, does this a lot. They would memorize ungodly quotes and put their faith in them and when it’s necessary they mention the quote. A good quote that comes mind that many recite, “Yolo”, you only live once. This quote is easily deceiving and justifies your actions. If only we use Scripture to determine our actions. A great replacement verse for YOLO can be a Psalm 1:1-2, “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” It’s lengthy but directing you to walk in righteousness.
2) Memorizing Bible Verses Grows Knowledge of God
Scripture memorization grows me in the knowledge of God: of who He is, what He promises, and who I am in Christ. I found that memorizing Scripture has given me more understanding and knowledge of God than anything else. Yes, I love studying the Word and listen to commentaries. But it’s different when you are writing the Words of God on your heart and reciting them. God can speak to you in different forms. It’s like this, when you are driving through the neighborhood you see all the beautiful homes but miss the details. However, if you are walking through the neighborhood you can see the individual flowers, plants, and decors. Memorizing Scripture means slowing down and walking through the passage, verse by verse.
3) Memorizing Bible Verses Equips to Handle Situations Rightly
Memorizing bible verses equips me to handle situations rightly. Each verse I hide in my heart gives me the option to handle my trails. Whether it is words of comfort, encouragement, or direction. I work as a manager in a call center here in Michigan and that gives me the joy to be able to encounter people of all sorts of personalities. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 is always repeating in my head when I must interact with a stronger personality or a rebellious one.
4) Memorizing Bible Verses Helps Thinking About the Excellent and Praiseworthy
Memorizing Bible verses gives me something to reflect and edify myself to meditate throughout the day. In Philippians 4:8, God tells us what to dwell on: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.” So, when heavy burdens arise the memorized bible verses that are hidden in my heart points me the worthy. And it focuses my thoughts on the very words that give me supernatural strength.
5) Downtime counts for Eternity and Enduring Forever
Whether I’m waiting in line at a store, running errands, stuck in long traffics, cleaning my apartment or making dinner: I can make the most of it by disciplining my mind on learning or reviewing the memorized bible verses. The most assuring passage is Isaiah 55:11, “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” I love knowing that the time I spend memorizing Scripture will never be in the void. God is using every hidden Bible verse in your heart in countless ways; Benefit from His Word by memorizing it.
