The Heart of Stone VS The Heart of Flesh

The Heart of Stone

True religion begins, then, with the heart, and the heart is the ruling power of manhood. After the fall of man, sin entered our hearts becaming wicked and cold causing contamination to our life and character. The heart by nature is a lying millstone and it hardens by contact with the world. When you have a heart of stone, by means you have no principle and you’re easily ruled to sin over and over again. The heart is the center of spiritual activity and the seat of conscience (Romans 2:15) it’s not meant to be dead, hard, or cold, but conscience of all its ways. Unfortunately, the stony heart has no clarification between the three. So, if you have a heart of stone your ways cannot be righteous because the nature of your heart contains no mercy or tenderness. Here, tenderness is absent due to a non-regenerated heart.

Non-Regenerated

A heart that hasn’t been regenerated is unavailing and their life is as inconsistent as the wind. The more the man sins the harder the heart becomes and every time the man sins, it becomes easier to sin again. Like a stone falling, sin gains force and increased in velocity. The man who sins once has a stronger tendency to sin again and when sin is active in a man, the heart callouses and each sin makes the stony heart refuse change. Therefore, as long as the man’s heart continues by its nature-dead, and hard, and cold; tears are lost and the preaching of the law, and even of Christ crucifixion are null and void and fall hopelessly.

The Heart of Flesh

God created man upright (Ecc. 7:29) without any transgression or iniquity. When God created man, he created him in his perfect image. The man was made innocent before the deceit and after the fall the human heart fond of evil resulting separation from the Creator. The fall of man caused all humanity to have a heart of stone. This is where God makes the impossible, possible. So, God makes a covenant with Israel that he will remove their heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh. In order for this to happen, a regeneration needs to take place because the heart of flesh is a benefit of sovereign grace and its always the result of divine power. When God made this covenant with Israel in Ezekiel 11:14-25, he made it clear the condition the heart of flesh will have and that is a righteous walk that keeps God’s commandments through your faith in in the redemption work.

Regenerated

This is a divine rescue of regeneration. When your heart has been regenerated it means that you’ve been given a new heart and right spirit. When God gives you a heart of flesh, everything about your heart changes. You possess a heart that can yield when the gospel attacks-a heart that is admiring when the seal of God’s Word comes upon it and a heart that can think, aspire, and love. Not out of your own power but through the power of the Holy Spirit living within. Those who lose their stony hearts are afraid to sin, even before they sin they are afraid. This is caused by the tenderness of your conscience. But even when the tender heart sins, they are left feeling uneasy because the heart of flesh wishes to be obedient to every statue of God’s.

God, we thank you for the redemption we have through Christ, Jesus. We thank you for making a way out of this sinful nature and giving us an opportunity to be regenerated by you. I pray for those that haven’t been regenerated with a heart of flesh. Lord, you made the impossible, possible for us. Enlighten them with your divine power and soften their hearts towards your law that they may be able to see Jesus and the salvation he brings. We ask of you, Lord, that you may give us wisdom and understanding to know the difference between a heart of stone and heart of flesh. Bless us with your tenderness that we may be conscience in all our ways and obedient to your commands. We thank you, God, for your mercy and compassion that you have for us. Mold us and change us to be children after your own heart. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
