One of the greatest gifts given to mankind is the Word of God. The Bible is God’s way of revealing Himself and communicating Himself to us in writings. Everything we ought to know about God is written between the covers of this book. This means, that anything and everything we need to know about the Christian life is found in the Holy Scriptures.
Many times Christians believe things that are nowhere found in the Bible. How does this happen? Where did these beliefs come from and how often do we believe them? Just because it sounds good to our ears does not mean that it’s biblical truth. We should always test things according to the Word of God. Start by asking, what does God say about this? In this post I want to talk about 9 lies Christians believe that are not found in the Bible.
Table of Contents
1) God wants me to be happy.
It’s a common belief that God exists to
grant us blessings like he’s some sort of personal genie, granting our every
wish. Saying, “God wants me to be happy” is simply justifying the
sinful nature. Your thoughts may go around these lines, “I know God wants
me to be happy even if I did lie, lust, idolatrize, or fornicate, etc. Because
God is love and He is good.” Yes, God is love and God is good. But God is
also just and righteous. Happiness is tied to feelings and emotions that often
base on present situations, which are constantly changing. God is calling us to
obedience and trust that everything He does is for our good, even if it doesn’t
make you feel ‘happy’ at the moment (Romans 8:28).
2) God won’t give you more than you can handle.
Sad to say but life is more than we can handle. We live in a fallen world but that doesn’t mean that we should try really hard to carry our own burdens. Matter fact, we are to give up, quit, and surrender to the Creator. Everything is more than we can handle. Sin is more than we can handle. I mean think about it, we fall into sin daily. However, there is someone that can handle it all and that stands without blemish, Jesus. “For we do not want to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life.” (2 Cor 1:8). Therefore, let Jesus carry your burdens. “Come to me, all who labor are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt 11:28)
3) Bad things happen to good people.
The most dangerous part of this statement is how often Christians believe that we should be in the judgment seat of what is good and bad, or who is good and bad. One of the most common ways to make a judgment is by comparison. However, the Word of God has an equal ground about this because none of us are inherently good and our hearts are deceitful. Romans 3:10, “As it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one.” Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick, who can understand it?”
4) When you die, God gains another angel.
This statement really does get my blood flowing. Plain and simple. Humans are humans and angels are angels. We cannot compare the two and never will we become angels. This remains in eternity. In fact, Scripture tells us that we hold a higher position than angels. (1 Cor 6:3) “Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?” In fact, angels are charmed by the interaction between God and his “image-bearing” humans: (1 Peter 1:12) “It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.”
5) We’re all God’s children.
Yes, God created everyone. But not everyone relationally belongs to Him. The ones repented of sin, placed their faith in Jesus Christ as Lordship and Savior, and possess the Holy Spirit inside of them can claim God as their Father: “But you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:15-16). More sadly to say but those that have not put their faith in Jesus as their Savior and do not have the Holy Spirit inside of them actually belong to Satan: “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:1-2). “By this evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:10).
6) Cleanliness is next to godliness.
It’s true, if you are clean you are a little more appreciated. But this is not scriptural. Often times parents will use this unbiblical statement to motivate their children to clean up. However, I highly recommend using the actual biblical statement: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may belong in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12).
7) God helps those who help themselves.
Now here is a statement that is completely anti-Gospel. The purpose of Christ dying on the cross is because we couldn’t help ourselves. This thought, or should I say belief is nothing but self-righteous and self-reliance. Trying your hardest to become perfect actually gets in the way of again because again, I say, there was nothing that we could’ve done that could’ve redeemed us from our sins. We need Jesus’ blood to cleanse us. We need Jesus to give us a new Spirit and a new heart. We need Jesus’ intervention to perfect us in righteousness. Carry your cross with Jesus because you cannot alone. “Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24).
There are many other lies that Christians believe that aren’t biblical and I pray for you, may the Holy Spirit give you discernment and guidance as you journey through this life. Remember to test everything you hear. Refer always to Godly thoughts. Anyhow,, can you name a few lies that Christians believe that aren’t true?
